Candidate ‘speed dating’ forum planned
North Hawaii voters are invited to participate in a second “speed dating” voter education candidate forum beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Waimea School cafeteria.
The event is co-hosted by 12 North Hawaii organizations, including the Waimea Community Association, Friends of the Future/Tutu’s House, Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders Association, Kailapa Community Association (Kawaihae homesteaders), Peoples Advocacy For Trails Hawaii, Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, North Hawaii Rotary Club, Baby Steps to Stronger Big Island Families, Friends of Thelma Parker Memorial Library, Waimea Preservation Association, Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club and Lalamilo Farmlots Association.
The forum will begin with each candidate having three minutes for a personal introduction, and will then follow a “speed dating” format, which gives small clusters of voters an opportunity to talk story with each individual candidate.
There is no charge and healthy snacks will be provided, along with complimentary coffee and water.
The forum will spotlight three major races — state Senate District 4, Hawaii County mayor and County Prosecutor.
Candidates who have confirmed participation include:
c State Senate District 4: Kelly Greenwell, Lorraine Inouye and Malama Solomon.
c Hawaii County Mayor: Billy Kenoi, Harry Kim and Dominic Yagong.
c Hawaii County Prosecutor: Lincoln Ashida and Mitch Roth.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of cash or nonperishable foods to be given to the Waimea food pantry operated by Annunciation Catholic Church. Checks payable to the church for the food pantry are tax deductible.

Fishing, boating group
plans swap meet
The Hawaii Fishing and Boating Association will hold its second annual swap meet from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club at Honokohau Harbor. There will be boat hardware and accessories, local arts and crafts, fishing gear and fresh fish for sale, food and beverages. Memberships for the association will be available, as well as T-shirts.
Vendors should call Amy Fine at 329-1012 to participate; anyone wanting to donate fish to the fundraiser should deliver it to Bite Me Fish Market at Honokohau or call Brian Wargo at 960-7154 who will fillet the fish and package it in the restaurant’s certified kitchen for sale.
Christmas in July
craft fair slated
The 20th annual Joann Williams Christmas in July Art, Gift and Craft Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel ballroom.
The event features vendors from all over Hawaii with exclusive items. Aside from a selection of gift items, the fair will feature jams and jellies, ornaments, quilts, ceramics, dolls, santas, assorted handmade jewelry, wood items, car decals, cards, pareo, paintings, ukulele, Hawaiian clothes, massage and oils, eyelash yarn and Hawaiian seed lei, photography, angels, bento babies, T-shirts, Tupperware, household and baby items, hair items, bags, dog care products, nail art, sushi, a micro massage unit, skin care products, hats, baked goods, pickled mango, purses and more.
Admission is free. Donated prizes from each vendor will be given away throughout the day, and there will be a silent auction.
